Can one set of definitions feed Excel, Power BI and planning tools?

Generally yes, if the definitions live outside any single tool. When revenue or deposits are defined once and each tool reads that definition, or data prepared from it, Excel, Power BI, Fabric models and planning platforms can show the same number. When each tool holds its own logic, they tend to drift apart with every change.

Definitions held inside one platform's semantic model can be reused within that platform's ecosystem, but are harder to share with tools outside it.

Why tools drift apart

  1. Logic is rebuilt per tool. DAX in Power BI, formulas in Excel, mappings in the planning tool.
  2. Changes don't propagate. A fix in one place leaves the others stale.
  3. No shared owner. Each tool's owner maintains their own version.

How to keep them aligned

  1. Define each key figure once, outside the reporting tools.
  2. Have its business owner, usually in finance, approve it.
  3. Point each tool at the approved definition, or at data prepared from it.
  4. Change the definition in one place, then confirm each tool picks up the change.

How Preql helps

Preql keeps approved definitions in one governed place, with owner approval and version history, so the same definitions produce consistent results across tools and workflows.

FAQ

Do we have to rebuild our Power BI models?

Not to start. Begin by aligning the measures that reach leadership.

Can definitions from one platform be reused elsewhere?

Partly. A Power BI semantic model, for example, can be used from Excel and some other tools. Sharing definitions across vendors and AI tools is easier when they're held in a separate context layer.
